How to Buy Counter Bar Stools

There are no seats in the kitchen that are more casual than bar stools. They are great for sitting down to an informal meal or just a good gab session. When you get ready to buy bar stools, there are several things to take into consideration.

The most important thing is the measurements. You will have a big problem if the stools you buy leave you too little room to sit comfortably beneath the counter. No one wants to be pinched. At the same time, you do not want stools that are so low that you cannot reach the countertop well.

The way to deal with this is to take measurements before you buy. Measure the distance between the top of your counter and the floor. Then subtract 10 to 13 inches, depending on your preference, for your thighs. The resulting figure should give you the height you need for your stools.

You also need to get the right number of stools for your counter space. The normal distance would be about 25 inches measuring from the center of the first seat to the center of the next one, and so on. Measure your counter in inches and divide by 25. This will give you the number of  stools you need on each side.

Get bar stools with arms, if you choose, but make sure they fit under the counter. You would not want people to have to sit back far from their plates because the chair arms blocked them from sitting close.

Counter bar stools in particular need to be very stain resistant. Cooking residue and lots of food make kitchen upholstery a prime target for spills. Also, get fabrics that brighten up your kitchen. Most kitchens need all the light they can get, and the lighter the stools are, the better.

Finally, while you can get bar stools that have different numbers of legs, the ideal number of legs for bar stools is at least four. Any less and the chair would be unstable for dining purposes. Be sure to get a soft cushion as well.

Bar stools are easy to find, but you would do well to think before you buy. Take your measurements to get the ideal type and number of bar stools. Choose chairs that work best in a kitchen setting.
