Redecorating Your Kitchen

A new kitchen, a personal perspective

Not everyone gets as excited about redecorating as I do. One of the things I find most rewarding is the satisfaction of knowing I can personalize my space and do the work myself. Last summer, I decided to renovate my kitchen because I was tired of looking at my poor worn-out kitchen cabinets.

The thing that really motivated me to remodel my kitchen was the demise of my stove. The poor thing had only two operational burners, and was hopelessly stuck in the 70’s with its avocado colored enamel. After purchasing my new stove, I decided to theme my whole kitchen after the new stove’s sleek modern style. Sketching out the kitchen layout was my next step, paying attention to every detail along the way.

While this was somewhat tedious, but it made the renovation projects go smoothly, and I probably saved a lot of time and avoided many headaches in the process. Having a sketch of my entire kitchen allowed me to visualize what exactly I needed to do to get the job done. I then had to decide was what type of cabinets I was going to install and what kind of knobs I should purchase to complete the design.

I decided to go with a contemporary look, because the stove was new and sleek-looking. I didn't want a lot of the hardware to show so I decided on hidden hinges. They are installed differently than regular hinges, as the measuring is a bit different, but other than that, it's not difficult.

Because I did all my measuring beforehand, I managed to get the exact amount of materials that I needed to install my cabinet doors. However, getting 10 percent extra in materials is usually recommended. My friend recommended that I select unfinished cabinet doors so that I could finish them to my personal specifications. After picking up the doors I wanted, I treated them with a dark red colored stain with a deep gloss finish that really complemented my new kitchen’s modern style.
Stainless steel knobs finished the cabinets nicely and were not a problem to install. There are many different types of knobs and handles out there that it is often a tough choice. I decided on a knob design that was simple and functional, and easy to maintain over the years.

Updating your kitchen cabinets is one of the easiest things you can do to a kitchen that will have the most dramatic impact. Because it's so affordable to change the look of a kitchen, many people across the country renovate their kitchens routinely. Everything from sketching out my kitchen to the installation of my cabinets was simple and straightforward.

When the time comes to remodel your kitchen, take the proper steps to assure you don't end up with a lot of headaches. In the end, you are the one that needs to be satisfied with the outcome or it will be all for naught. Don't make any rash decisions; purchase the hardware style that suits your taste and you should have a kitchen you will be pleased with for many years to come.
