Ventilation for your kitchen
Although life would be much better if you could just avoid dealing with
ventilating a kitchen dedicated to cooking, you must deal with the
ventilation issues.
The most common concept is to install a downdraft fan behind the cook top. The
fan is incorporated into the design with some varieties of cook tops and ranges.
That will solve the visual problem of an overhead hood interfering with the
design of the kitchen. You may want to remember that even the best down draft
fan is not able to deal with the worst cooking odors.
If you really want to get rid of the fried fish smell, you will have to
install a second exhaust fan into the ceiling. An additional fall will also help
to limit the amount of moisture that condenses on the inside of your windows in
the winter when you are cooking with a tall stockpot.
Another option for dealing with the ventilation issue is to install an overhead
hood that extends up through the ceiling. Because the hood will be exposed on
all sides, it must be completely finished, which will be costly, and it will
become a dominant element in the layout of the kitchen.
You could choose a manufactured version, or have a hood custom made and
finished in just about any material. The main concern here is that the mass of a
hood, placed low enough to be effective, can ruin the joy of having open space. |
